Booking & Admission

Before you come to Hospital for surgery there are some things you'll need to do to prepare for admission.

Pre-Admission

An important part of your day hospital care is the Pre-Admission process. After your doctor has explained your procedure and completed consent forms with you, they will advise you of the date of your surgery and will provide you with admission forms which need to be completed and returned to us.

Below you will find a list of things you will need to do before your day hospital admission. If you have any questions about your admission, please contact our team who will be happy to assist you.

To help us prepare for your upcoming surgery, we need you to provide specific information. Please complete and return your Pre-Admission form at least 7 days before your admission, either:

Contact your health fund

Please contact your health fund prior to admission to ensure that you do not have any restrictions to your cover, are financial and have served all applicable waiting periods. Your health fund will also be able to advise you of any excess or co-payments that you may incur.

Self-funded patients with no health insurance are also welcome at Far North Day Hospital. An Estimate of hospital costs can be requested by contacting our team.

Organise your escort home

After an anaesthetic, for your safety, you must have a responsible adult accompany you home and be with you for at least the first 24 hours following your surgery.  If this cannot be organised, please contact the day hospital at least two days prior to your admission to discuss your discharge plan with one of our registered nurses.

Work Cover or a Third Party claim

If your admission is as a result of a Work Cover or a Third Party claim, the hospital will require prior written approval for your admission from the relevant insurance company. Your admission cannot be confirmed or proceed until this approval is received.

General fasting instructions

The below information outlines standard fasting instructions. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the day hospital to speak with one of our registered nurses.

  • Morning Surgery: AM arrival
    NO food is to be consumed after 12am (midnight).You can continue to drink clear fluids (Acceptable fluids) up until 2 hours prior to your admission time.
    Please DO NOT drink anything after this time.
  • Afternoon Surgery: PM arrival
    NO food is to be consumed after 6am.You can continue to drink clear fluids (Acceptable fluids) up until 2 hours prior to your admission time.
    Please DO NOT drink anything after this time.

A staff member will call you one to two days before your booked surgery to confirm your admission details, fasting time and to verify any hospital costs to be paid on admission.
